Marple's lawyer, Christian Gilbranson, requested that Marple visit his stepmother Carrie Louise Serrocold at her rural estate, who is an old friend of Miss Marple. Carrie's husband Lewis revealed to Miss Marple that he suspected someone was slowly poisoning his wife. When Gilbranson visited the mansion, he was mysteriously murdered.
